Seagulls and starfish
2 Sept 2011.
We started working on our sculptures today. First we started painting the feet and beaks of our seagulls in colour that we each chose. We learnt about mixing red, blue and yellow to make green, orange or purple, although most of us already knew about this. Did you know that all colours come from red, blue and yellow, sometimes mixed with black or white? The feet and beaks were already cut out for us in thin pieces of wood (MDF). While we waited for those to dry we painted large sheets of paper with those same colours, that we can later cut into feather shapes to glue to our bird bases.
When we had time we read about 'Samantha Seagull's sandals' by Gordon Winch with our teachers and danced to 'Happy Feet', a video about penguins. In the afternoon we started knotting and weaving strips of fabric into wire starfish shapes. For some of us this was our first time making knots and weaving.
